The Wes and Julie Burton
Membership Assistance Fund

In July, 2013, Julie Burton gave a generous donation to the St. Louis Frontrunners to honor her brother Wes Burton. She asked that this donation be used to fund membership dues for individuals who wish to become members of the St. Louis Frontrunners, but are in need of financial assistance.

Wes Burton was one of the first members of the St. Louis Frontrunners.  He joined the club in 1984 and was the group’s leader for many years. During the late 80s, participation in the group runs dwindled, but Wes never lost sight of his belief that the St. Louis Frontrunners could become a vibrant, strong, and important part of the St. Louis LGBT community.  He participated in Pride each year, paid for club advertising in the local gay paper, and visited other Frontrunner clubs across country to learn how to attract and retain members. And, of course, he showed up year round every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday to welcome old and new friends and enjoy a run in beautiful Forest Park. Thanks in large part to Wes’ dedication, leadership, and friendship, the club grew to nearly 100 members at its peak in the early 2000s.

In 2001, Wes moved to Philadelphia with his partner, Kevin. He moved back to St. Louis in 2009 and quickly became a vital part of the St. Louis Frontrunners family once again. His sister Julie joined the club in 2010. Wes passed away in October of 2011 and has been greatly missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him. In 2012, St. Louis Frontrunners donated funds to Forest Park Forever to plant three trees near the Visitors' Center in his memory. The Wes and Julie Burton SLFR Membership Assistance fund will ensure his legacy lives on.
